Altara Games provided £1.5m in loans to UK game studios in 6 months

Figures show significant interest in loans against video games tax relief by developers across the UK

Altara Games today has released figures on its loans against video games tax relief to date. In just under 6 months, the company has provided loans to the value of over £1.5m.

These loans have varied in size from £70k to over £500k, and have been provided a broad range of studios and games across the UK.

Ella Romanos said “We started this company to provide what we believed was crucial support for UK studios to help them grow and develop new titles, and to enable them to use the tax relief to their advantage as much as possible. I am thrilled that we have been able to work with such a diverse group of studios, from small teams to larger established studios. I believe our approach of fast turnaround and genuinely understanding the realities of game development has helped us to ensure our loans are suited to industry needs.”

Altara Games provides loans from any point during development, even before development has begun as long as the company has their ‘interim certificate’ confirming that their game is eligible for relief. Loans are provided within weeks, and are only repaid once the tax relief is received.

Altara Games to provide loans against Games Tax Relief

New company to support studios to cashflow their game development

New company Altara Games today announces that they will provide loans for UK studios against games tax relief. Film companies have been able to access loans against Film Tax Relief for some time, and Altara Games aims to provide the same support to games companies.

The company will be run by games industry developer and consultant Ella Romanos, with Harbottle & Lewis acting as legal advisors.

I am very pleased to announce Altara Games, which I believe will provide crucial support for studios in the development of their own titles. Many developers are now taking advantage of the games tax relief, and I want to encourage more to do so. By providing these loans, we can help studios to cashflow their business and develop their own IP, both of which are crucial for growth.”- Ella Romanos

Currently developers can apply for a games tax relief ‘interim certificate’ in advance of the development of their game, which validates that their game will meet the criteria for the relief and how much they can claim, however they cannot claim the money until much later. Altara Games will provide loans for companies who have this interim certificate, and the loan will only be repaid once the tax relief money is received.
